A tried-and-true solution to missing teeth is dentures, with millions of people having their own pair. You might have them yourself and are enjoying the confident, full smile they give you. That said, to keep them in great shape for years, you will need to brush them. They might look natural, so you may want to brush with them inside your mouth, but this isn’t the best idea. Here’s why.

Why Can’t I Brush My Dentures While Wearing Them?

Technically, you can brush dentures while wearing them, but this isn’t recommended. You’ll only be able to clear off debris and plaque on the front surface. You won’t be able to remove them on all sides, so you risk developing buildup, a bad smell, or stains. These can then make you self-conscious about your smile.

Not only that, but your gums can be affected. As bacteria accumulate, they can start attacking the soft tissues. Sores and infection may be more likely, so the fit can become uncomfortable. You also risk developing denture stomatitis, which leads to inflammation, a burning sensation, and redness. By removing this prosthetic, you can avoid a wide range of trouble.

How Should I Clean My Dentures?

If you are in a rush, you can brush while wearing your dentures, but make sure to set aside time later on to properly give them a good scrubbing. Using a soft-bristle toothbrush and clear, gentle soap, clear off plaque all over them. They can be slippery, so consider setting a towel down or filling the sink with water.

Once you’re done, take a moment to look for any damage. Make note of anything worrying so you can call your dentist about it and get it sorted out sooner rather than later. During the night, make sure you soak your restoration, and you’re all set!

Don’t forget to care for your gums as well. Use a cloth to wipe them down and your inner cheek. This will get rid of any buildup and prevent it from transferring. If you have any sores, then now is a good chance to see how they are healing.

In the end, caring for your dentures doesn’t have to be a long process. Building a habit of taking them out to brush is a small thing to do, but an important one in keeping them in great shape for longer.
