Dental implants continue to gain popularity as a reliable way to rebuild smiles after tooth loss because of their unique placement in your jaw. Unlike dentures and bridges, they become a permanent part of your mouth and are usually stronger and longer-lasting as a result.

However, you must care for your mouth carefully during recovery so you don’t accidentally harm your new tooth. With that in mind, continue reading to learn about 3 foods to avoid after your procedure that could cause implant failure!

Option #1: Hard Fruits and Veggies

Your dentist will provide a comprehensive list of post-operative instructions intended to help you recover quickly while avoiding possible complications. For example, your mouth must form a blood clot at the surgical site to prevent bacteria from causing an infection, which is the number one leading cause of failure: peri-implantitis.

Raw fruits and veggies are usually considered beneficial snacks because they are rich in various nutrients required for healing. However, biting and chewing hard foods can dislodge your blood clot and should be avoided. You can still enjoy these wholesome ingredients, but you should soften them first by cooking, steaming, or grilling them.

Option #2: Anything Too Hot or Spicy

Your dentist will undoubtedly numb your mouth and/or sedate you for your procedure, so you likely won’t experience any associated aches or inflammation until the medications wear off afterwards. Then, it’s normal to feel some swelling and soreness in or around your restoration.

Unfortunately, eating anything too hot or spicy can trigger additional irritation, which only exacerbates your condition. Not only that, but they might also dislodge the blood clot that must form at the surgical site to protect the underlying tissues. Thankfully, this can be prevented by sticking to room-temperature, mildly flavored meals for the first few days to avoid additional discomfort.

Option #3: Alcoholic Beverages

You’re not alone if you enjoy a glass of wine while cooking dinner or a cold beer at the end of the day to unwind. But this adult beverage can negatively affect your recovery in several ways.

For instance, it can slow your healing process by suppressing your immune system, making it harder for your body to fight off infections, such as gum disease. It can also increase swelling and bleeding, worsening aches and pains after your procedure. Many experts suggest waiting at least 72 hours after your procedure before having a drink, though waiting longer can help reduce the risk of developing any adverse effects.

Following your dentist’s instructions after your implant surgery can help you mend as quickly as possible while preventing potential complications!
